  • Scientific name: Thayeria obliqua
  • Synonyms: Thayeria sanctaemariae (Ladiges, 1951)
  • Common name: Penguin Tetra
  • Group: Characins
  • Distribution: South America; Brazil, central Amazon basin, in the Rio Tocantins and Rio Guaporé river basin.
  • Size: 8 cm
  • Biotope: Inhabits the small jungle streams and tributaries.
  • Social behavior: A peaceful schooling fish, that can be kept in a South American community aquarium, and usually swim near the surface. Always buy a group of at least 6-10 species.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; A micropredator feeding on small insects and worms in nature, but in the aquarium they will eat all kinds of small live, frozen and dry foods.
  • Breeding: Hard
  • Tank: Minimum 90 litres
  • Population: 6-7 fish for 120 litres
  • Decoration: They look great in heavily-planted aquarium with dark substrate and with lots of floating plants. The tank can be further decorated with tree branches and smooth rocks. Another option is to build a biotope aquarium for them with river sand bottom, some twisted roots and a handful of dried leaves over the substrate, to stain the water the color of weak tea. The lighting should be low, and aquatic plants are not necessary for this type of biotope setup.
  • Temperature: 22-28 °C
  • pH: 5.8-7.5
  • Hardness: 2.0-15.0 dGH
  • Lifespan: 3-5 years
Description: Sadly the pretty Penguin tetra, is only very rarely available in petstores. This Tetra has a longish body with a brownish or golden base color. The belly is white or silvery. Thayeria obliqua is looking very similar to its relative the Blackline penguinfish (Thayeria boehlkei), but the two species are easy to tell apart, as on the Penguin Tetra the thick black stripe extending from the lower lobe of the caudal fin tapers upwards, fading out completely before it reaches the dorsal fin, while on the Thayeria boehlkei this black line travels laterally, and extends to the gill cover. The rest of the fins of this fish are transparent. In addition, a golden stripe extends from the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin. All these species swim in a head-up position, the angle to the water surface is about 30°. This swimming behaviour, combined with the contrasting black and white pattern, camouflages the typical fish shape and so the tetras are better protected against predators.

Females have more rounded belly and a little less intensely colored than males.

There are no reports of their successful aquarium breeding, but most likely they breed the same way as their relatives, the Blackline penguinfish (Thayeria boehlkei) do.
