Description: The Blackline Tetra is a typical basic characin which is well suited as a beginner's fish, as it is prolific and easy-to-breed. The body is laterally compressed, silvery colored with a clearly defined black line running horizontally along the middle of the body from the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin, where it ends in a dark blotch.

The females are a little larger and plumper than the more slender males.

They are very prolific, a female can lay up to 800 eggs. The breeding tank (which can be a small, 20 litres aquarium) should have a substrate of marbles or a spawning grid to prevent the parents to eat their own eggs and a small clump of javamoss. After spawning the parents should be removed. The eggs hatch after 24 hours and the larvae become free-swimming after another 2 days. The fry can be easily raised. You can feed them the first days with very fine infusoria and a few days later with baby brine shrimp.
