Description: The Headstander is an elongated fish with a pike type body. Color varies from brown to black with three yellow horizontal stripes. The dorsal fin is usually red as is the area on the base of the tail. Its fins are transparent, sometimes with a light brown cast. This fish has a pointed head and an upturned mouth. Though generally calm, like all headstanders, it is sensitive to shadows and it likes to jump, so be sure to keep the aquarium covered. The filter should create a strong current to make the fish more comfortable. It may nip at long-flowing finned fish at night. This fish is commonly bred in fish hatcheries throughout South America and Asia. The diet of the fish apparently plays a very important role in initiating the spawn.
